Consulting vs. Coaching: What’s the Difference?
If you’re wondering what the difference is between consulting and coaching, don’t worry. It’s a common question. Here’s how I like to describe it…
If you ask a consultant to help you drive your car to a certain destination, the consultant will sit in the passenger seat next to you and tell you the best way to hold the steering wheel, how soon to start pumping the breaks before a stop, when to shift gears, etc…. but she won’t tell you what your destination is or how to get there. That should already have been decided upon before you got in the car.
A coach, on the other hand, will sit in the back seat and ask you where you’re going, why you want to get there, and will help you figure out the best route to that destination from multiple options. She will only give you specifics about how to drive the car when you ask.
So, if you hire us as consultants, we will decide together up front what information you want to learn and what you want to achieve with our help. We will then teach you the specific information and specific skills you need to achieve your desired result. We will be very directive about how to “drive the car” and there will be a clearly-defined ending for our work together.
If, on the other hand, you hire us for coaching, we will work with you to define your biggest challenges, set objectives for improvement, and suggest steps to achieve those objectives. We will be less directive about “the way” to do things and more interested in helping you find the approaches that work best for you. There will often be no clearly-defined final destination, and the focus is more on continual improvement. You can stay in a coaching arrangement with us for a short time or continue working with us indefinitely.
To use language often used in education circles, consulting is more like being taught by “the sage on the stage” or in a workshop, while coaching is more like being directed by the “guide on the side.”
I hope that helps.
